Summary of David's From Pain to Paradise Story

My pain story: The puzzle has been coming together since April 2nd, 1968, when I was drafted in Brooklyn, New York. I had a year added, making it three, in exchange for erasing and sealing my juvenile record, and took tests that showed I had lots of talent and skill that no one mentioned to me growing up at home or in High School.  I was put on a train to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, to receive Basic Training. In Basic, I called my girlfriend, took a lot of quarters in the pay phone, and she said, “I’m pregnant, and hung up when I did not instantly propose. I called back and did the right thing.  Another miracle: I became selected, because of high abilities in math and logic in tests I toke when drafted, to be a supply sergeant and had to learn to type, then was promoted to company clerk, like “Radar” in the movie MASH in Fort Lee, Virginia, and of course, was sent to the Vietnam War, 1969-1970, and was assigned to be company clerk in Saigon, at the USAHAC special services unit, and was exposed to Agent Orange infiltrated into the water, soil, air and food. Fast forward to New Year’s morning of 2022, I was peeing blood, and I was diagnosed with a terminal Stage IV cancer (28 on a usual scale of 10), which meant an aggressive cancer had left the prostate gland, colonized four lymph nodes, and was prepared to colonize all that remained. I was fortunate to find my way to MD Anderson, and they determined that I was eligible for a Stage 2 clinical trial. With a new application of a pharma medicine, hormone shots to bring testosterone to zero, 28 rounds of radiation, and today, I stand here cancer-free. Which means about six years it will take to get my strength in my legs back as a runner, and I am in rehab with my wife, who just had a stroke.

My paradise story: I got out of the Army four months early, while stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, if and only if I attended Burlington Community College, full-time. I was the first in my family tree to ever go to college, and my parents thought their idiot son would never do it.  But the Army taught me leadership and discipline. So I worked harder than most and graduated 1st in class, which got me a scholarship to Rider University, where I tied for 1st place in that class and was forced to give a Commencement Address with shaking knees. This got me a fellowship to the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana MBA program. As my dad’s business failed again, and the next one too, I stayed at U of I, and got my PhD in Organizational Development (OD). Turned out I excelled in storytelling theory and how to use it in OD. But a problem became apparent at my first Assistant Professor job at UCLA: the pay was so low —$19K —and my family expanded to two children. I had to take on extra jobs as a grant writer and an assertiveness trainer at Hughes Aircraft (Building 17). I could do academic theory, but translating it into publications eluded me, and OD practice was not possible until I went to Loyola Marymount (LMU), a teaching university. All my UCLA colleagues said, ‘David, you will fail, you failed at UCLA, a published place, and you will fail to make it at a teaching university.  The failure to get tenure at UCLA and prophecies of failure at LMU prompted me to apply my discipline, perseverance, and military clerking skills to becoming a teacher and doing volunteer work in public housing, Nickerson Gardens in Watts. I met Laura King, the resident leader and president of the community council, and she taught me lessons in leadership and consulting.

Fast forward to 2025: remarried, living in New Mexico, early retired after 23 years at New Mexico State University; when their funding dried up, I was forced out by 2021.  Where’s the paradise in that, you ask?  It is in two weekly Zoom sessions that have been a lifesaver, GrowthOD, and Enthinkment.

THE LONGER VISION: HORSESENSE & PERVIEW FOR ALL VETERANS

David's pain-to-paradise story grounds this entire mission. Drafted in 1968, exposed to Agent Orange, diagnosed with Stage IV terminal cancer in 2022, now cancer-free—this is personal.

The vision: Scale from 10 veteran sessions/month to 100+ through the social enterprise model. Every executive, HR professional, consultant, and coach who invests $75 in their professional development becomes a mission partner. They learn cutting-edge OD, and a veteran family heals.

HorseSense (Grace Ann Rosile's method) and PERVIEW coaching offer what the VA does not: no repeated exposure to trauma, no diving into the incident, just gentle restorying through the wisdom of horses and the 7-step PERVIEW method. Family systems included—because PTSD does not happen in isolation.

By 2027:

·       1,000+ LinkedIn newsletter subscribers

·       10,000+ Storytelling Organization group members

·       50+ seats per $75 Zoom session

·       $20,000+/month to veteran services

·       30-50 veteran families served monthly

·       A proven model other organizations can replicate

From corporate boardrooms to veteran healing—this is GrowthOD in action.

In time, we will be inviting LinkedIn Newsletter subscibers and Storytelling Organization group members to the Annual Quantum Storytelling Conference Dec 17-19, 2025 in LA

Part I: GrowthOD.com

I began taking my academic publications — some research, others consulting gigs — and translating them into practitioner-readability, clarity, and action steps for OD. I teamed up with a pack of consultants, coaches, and artists, and set about developing the five pillars of GrowthOD.

1.         PERVIEW Pillar (Processes of Embodied Restorying with Vibrations in Energy Waves): This neuroscience-informed, seven-step coaching method helps leaders release stuck narratives and emotional blocks by restorying organizational energy. For example, a healthcare leader might use PERVIEW to restory burnout narratives into collaborative care models.

2.         GLOW Pillar (Gratitude, Love, Organizational Wisdom): This cultivates a gratitude-centered culture, raising collective resilience and performance through appreciation. In IT, GLOW could transform toxic team dynamics by fostering emotional coherence.

3.         SEAM Pillar (Socio-Economic Approach to Management): Drawing on Henri Savall’s diagnostics, SEAM uncovers hidden costs of story dysfunction—alienation, exclusion—and recycles them into socio-economic value. In politics, SEAM could address voter distrust by aligning campaign narratives with community well-being.

4.         SOULS Pillar (Self-Organizing Understanding Leadership Systems): Rooted in Axiology and VuJaDé mindfulness, SOULS aligns individual purpose with organizational wisdom. A Disney leader might use SOULS to integrate cast members’ stories with corporate goals.

5.         AAM Pillar (Auxiliary Assumption Method):  The Copernican Revolution in statistics by David Trafimow. AAM ensures scientific validity by testing the hidden assumptions underlying practices and grounding transformation in evidence. In healthcare, AAM could validate new care narratives against patient outcomes.

Thus, the book is a piece of paradise: Boje, D. M., & Parr-Rud, O. (2025a). GROWTH OD: Gratitude-Rooted Organizational Wisdom, Transformation & Healing. Tamaraland Publishing. https://GrowthOD.org/Final%20GROWTH%20OD%20Book%20by%20David%20Boje%20and%20Colleagues%20July%206%202025.pdf

Another piece of paradise, the puzzle begins to come together. I started noticing at age 77 that I was quickly forgetting my own contributions—books, journal articles, and studies — to the field of OD. I started gathering each of them and translating them from dense, insertable writing requirements of publish-or-perish to the straight talk of practitioners of OD. Olivia, Tom, Ken, Grace Ann, and I formed a steering team, and it changed everything: attendance up, ensemble leadership in action. Peter and Harvey of anxiogenic, and Monty and Doug of Vujade, pitched in based on the SOULS pillar.

Part II: Enthinkment.com

I needed a Think Tank to do the heavy lifting, to fill in the missing piece of the puzzle, to focus on philosophy, and do the work of turning dense materials of my own, and unfinished dreams, into the practicality of coaching, consulting, and training, and certifying folks in a new approach to OD. Some of the GrowthOD crew began to attend enthink TANK, as we call it.  Sabiine Trafimow focused on several books by Heidegger, a project started when teaching doctoral students at NMSU. After NMSU, we formed the Enthinkment Circle with Rohny Saylors, Betty Beeler, Duncan Pelly, Usha Haley, Wanda Cousar, and others. It got up to about 25 people, then crashed to about 7 to 9, showing up, after the coffee clutch time took up more of its purpose, and most stopped coming, feeling 90 minutes was not worth their time.

Two books resulted from the cross-fertilizing of enTHINK TANK Tuesday sessions with the GrowthOD Monday sessions:

1.        Beyond the Echo Chamber, a ‘120-page guide to GrowthOD and True Storytelling interventions by David Boje. https:// growthod.org/Beyond the Echo Chamber with GrowthOD and True Storytelling Oct 11, 2025, by David Boje.pdf

2.        The Melody That Keeps People Afloat: Quantum Storytelling for Organizational Transformation. How Hidden Stories Shape 90% of Reality by David Michael Boje, Tanya Akins Cane, with Doug Breckenridge, Free to  PDF to see online at https://growthod.org/David%20Boje%20and%20Tanya%20Akins%20Cane%20DRAFT%20Quantum%20Storytelling%20and%20the%20Quantum%20Coaching%20Sprint.pdf

Beyond the Echo Chamber pickup on my Tamaraland (1995) research article, and my (2008) Storytelling Organizations book. The enTHINK TANK sessions allowed the translation from my Heidegger (Being and Time) rendition of the seven Antenarrative processes, which were the backbone of Tamaraland and Storytelling Organizations’ approaches.  And to more clearly position Tamaraland as a kind of ‘Storytelling Organization’, which was in most every corporation, university, hospital, government agency, or arts organization. Sabine and led this project.

The second project was to sort out what as unique and applicable to PERVIEW about Heidegger’s much tougher book, ‘Mindfulness.’  It became clear to Sabine and me, in our presentations to EnTHINK TANK, that this Mindfulness was more akin to Thornton Wilder’s play and book “Our Town” and antithetical to counting your breaths by Jainism and Buddhism masters, or staying in the Now mindfulness, and its stress-reduction outcome, focused on in cognitive psychology.

The third kind of enTHINK TANK sessions were about Mikhail Bakhtin’s books, in particular, our recent sessions on his book, Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics.  My purpose was to unpack the six errors of polyphony, and several kinds of Double-Voiced Discourses, and the Objectified Discourse into something applicable to OD, and to GrowthOD in particular. My first attempt, Beyond the Echo Chamber,  did that, Than its sequel, the book The Melody That Keeps People Afloat: Quantum Storytelling for Organizational Transformation, does just that, and brought it full circle to do executive, HR staff, consultant, and coach training for $75 a seat in 90-minute Zoom sessions, so that that money could go to the PERVIEW Inc. 501 C 3, and go into providing HorseSense and Perview 7 step restorying Zoom sessions to veterans and their family members. PTSD and stress inculcate the entire family system, not just the veteran.  And it is a particular challenging Perview that must deal with the Mindfulness of the family, and its subordination to the Mindfulness of the Military, which has a ‘suck it up, and don’t get into your emotions, thoughts, and thinking, and used the repeated exposure to the initial traumatic incident again and again, as a way to desensitize the veteran. Veterans hate it and rarely return to the next appointment. Grace Ann Rosile used horsesense, a way of letting the horse mirror the veteran and family members’ unspoken thoughts and emotions. A series of sessions using PERVIEW coaching that does not dive into the rabbit hole of their incident-crisis but does address the negative feelings, thoughts, and questionable habits of action.

So now the Mission of Beyond the Echo Chambers ‘ was to rasie the money in OD consulting and coaching with GrowthOD, that could finance the quite expensive free horsesense (equine assisted psychotherapy) and the PERVIEW coaching services to Veterans and their family members for free.

We are still translating the work of antenarrative background in my 2001 book on Narrative Methods, because it undergirds the work in True Storytelling by Jens Larsen, David Boje, ‘and Lena Bruun (2020), as well as the three books, Beyond the Echo Chambers’, the book The Melody That Keeps People Afloat: Quantum Storytelling for Organizational Transformation,’ and the book, the book The Melody That Keeps People Afloat: Quantum Storytelling for Organizational Transformation.

Big challenge, antenarrative is still impenetrable, still in the publish-or-perish language.

Please beware, this next section still dense, and needs many more enTHINK Tank Tuesday weekly sessions to unpack and translate it to GrowthOD Monday weekly sessions.

What are antenarratives?
LOOK INSIDE:Read David Boje,’s  2001 Introduction to his book then you will know the complete answer!

"Antenarrative is defined as ‘the fragmented, non-linear, incoherent, collective, unplotted, and pre-narrative speculation, a bet, a proper narrative can be constituted’" (Boje, 2001: 1).

Antenarrative  is seven processes that are pre-constitutive of 'narrative' and 'living story'. The 7 B's:  Beneath, Bets, Before, Being, Becoming, Between, & Beyond. The 7 came after 20 years of investigation.

7 B’s of Antenarrative processes

  1. Beneath: This process goes beyond the surface level of narratives to examine the underlying assumptions, power dynamics, and material realities that shape stories. It involves looking at the microstoria of marginalized people and the material intertextualities that often get ignored in dominant narratives. For example, in the case of Haute Cuisine, the "beneath" involves examining the impact of fast food on traditional culinary practices and the shift in consumer preferences that is driving this change.
  2. Before: This process recognizes that the past is not static but is constantly being reinterpreted and reshaped in light of the present and future. It involves considering the historical context and the antecedent events that have led up to the current situation. In the context of entrepreneurship, understanding the "before" of an entrepreneur's journey can shed light on their motivations, experiences, and the factors that have shaped their venture.
  3. Bets: This process acknowledges that the future is uncertain and that innovation and entrepreneurship involve making calculated risks. These "bets" are based on prospective sensemaking, anticipating future possibilities and making decisions based on these projections. Analyzing these bets helps understand the decision-making process and the factors that influence entrepreneurial choices.
  4. Between: This process focuses on the relationships and interactions between various elements in the storytelling process. This includes the interplay between living stories and dominant narratives, the influence of different stakeholders, and the role of sociomaterial artifacts in shaping creative work. Understanding these "between" dynamics provides a more nuanced and contextual understanding of how stories are constructed and how they influence actions and outcomes.
  5. Becoming: This process emphasizes the dynamic and emergent nature of storytelling, recognizing that stories are constantly evolving and being reshaped.  "Becoming" highlights the continuous process of change and adaptation that characterizes innovation and entrepreneurship, as new ideas emerge, trends shift, and possibilities unfold.
  6. Beyond: This process encourages a broader perspective, considering the long-term implications and the ethical dimensions of storytelling. It involves thinking beyond immediate goals and profits to consider the impact of innovation and entrepreneurship on society, the environment, and future generations. This includes reflecting on the values and principles that guide innovation and ensuring that it contributes to a sustainable and equitable future.
  7. Being: This process explores the fundamental questions of identity, purpose, and existence in relation to storytelling. It involves examining the underlying assumptions and beliefs that shape our understanding of the world and our place within it. In the context of innovation and entrepreneurship, "being" prompts reflection on the motivations, values, and aspirations that drive these endeavors and their impact on individuals and society.

Antenarratives are the SEEDS of pre-story and pre-narrative. This website is dedicated to the study and exploration of antenarrative - the fragmented, non-linear, and complex 'seeds' of your organizational stories emerging and growing shaping your pre-story and pre-narrative coherence.  I'm David Michael Boje Ph.D.  I invented the term 'antenarrative’  in 2001, defining it as a process that precedes and shapes pre-narratives and pre-stories in organizations. Over the past two decades, antenarrative processes developed into key aspects:

Pre-narrative Speculation
Antenarratives are "bets" on potential future narratives. They represent fragmented, non-linear, and often incoherent speculations that may eventually coalesce into coherent narratives and well-known stories. This pre-narrative stage allows for multiple possibilities and interpretations 'antecedent' a dominant narrative emerges.

Temporal Dynamics
Antenarratives challenge traditional notions of causality and one-way temporality in storytelling:
1. They link retrospective pre-narratives to living, ongoing stories.
2. They reverse temporal logic, allowing potential futures to arrive from the future, not just the past, and then shaping (re-historicizing) how past events are interpreted and narrated in the present.

Multiple Life-Forms
I identified several types of antenarrative processes:
1. Pre/bet antenarratives: Fragmented stories that may develop into full narratives
2. Spiral antenarratives: Dynamic, evolving meanings to go beyond linear or closed-loop systems.
3. Rhizomatic assemblage: Combinatorial processes that maintain ambiguity and allow for multiple potential narratives.

Prospective Sensemaking
Antenarratives are crucial for "prospective sensemaking," enabling organizations to anticipate the risks of their; bets on the future’ and to shape possible futures rather than simply reacting (retrospectively) to past events. This forward-looking aspect distinguishes antenarratives from traditional narrative approaches.

Sociomaterial Aspects
Antenarrative processes involve social and material elements, in what Karen Barad calls 'material-discursive intra-activity, what Donna Haraway calls material-semiotics, and what Myra J. Hird calls 'superorganism' community of human and non-human life. They each recognize that not only people but also objects, environments, and other non-human entities contribute to storytelling and meaning-making in a posthuman multispecies ecology.

Focusing on seven pre-narrative and pre-story processes, antenarrative theory and practice provide a framework for understanding how pre-stories emerge, evolve, and shape organizational realities before they become fixed, often linear narratives. This approach offers valuable insights into the dynamic and complex nature of antenarrative pre-story and pre-narrative processes.

There are seven antenarrative processes that are pre-constitutive of all narratives and all living stories. Each process supports and extends a True Storytelling Principle (Larsen, Bruun, & Boje, 2021).

I have been developing a method to research Antenarrative Processes. You can see the previous posting, about Bets Fore-having https://davidboje.wordpress.com/what-is-the-before-antenarrative-fore-having/

Notice how all four hearts point to BEING-in-the-world. Being is not just timing; it is spatializing and mattering.

First, Antenarrative is the seed of pre-story and pre-narrative in Tamara-Land See Boje, D. M. (1995). Stories of the Storytelling Organization: A Postmodern Analysis of Disney As “Tamara-Land”. Academy of Management Journal, 38(4), 997-1035.Click Here for article PDF.

Why you need to do antenarrative self-reflection? Because you cannot be in every room at once in an organization with more that two rooms.. In an organization with just 6 rooms, there are six factorial path ways of networking, a choice of 740 paths, and you are choosing only a few. People arrive at the same room form different path routes. So what? The people in same room, get different meaning inference from waht they see and hear going on.  If it is a 12 room organization, that is 12 factorial, 479,001,600 route pathways to get from one place to another. You chase stories all day long, and cannot be in very room at once.   You are making abductive guesses, hunches, wild intuitive guesses on what is going on, becuase you are in pre-story and pre-narrative mdoe.

In John Krizanc's original Play (Tamara), people are in a mansion, and get a 1927 passport. He wants them not just to be entertained, but to chase stories, and characters, who keep changing the story. Why? To experience Mussolini fascism., with spies part of Mussolini black shirts, and spies for the resistance. Characters change their spin, from one room to the next.
